First Set of Level 51+ Skills Active

Yes, this is real.
No, it's not April fools.
And yes, we're as shocked as anyone.

But it is true, the 2 "all profession" level 51+ skills for each class are now active and in game.

Post bugs in applicable forums.
I know there's no need to ask for complaints because they'll show up without asking. :)

Server's filesystem became corrupted.

In short, this was the equivalent of "RAM Upgrade II", but Julian's quick thinking and foresight into making backups saved the day. (whew)

Server's filesystem became corrupted.

On Thursday, I asked the company that hosts Dark Castle's dedicated server to add remote KVM and power reset hardware to our server. This will incur an additional cost of $40/month on top of our current hosting fees. I requested this so that I can safely reboot the DC server without fear of an OS upgrade problem causing the server to go down where I cannot login to it remotely in order to fix it. With this new hardware we can stay more up to date with OS patches keeping our server safer from security vulnerbilities and other bugs.

When the technician who installed the remote KVM did so, he rebooted DC. He did not tell me that he was going to do so. I do not know if he did this safely or not since he didn't have password access to our server. After the remote KVM was installed, I could connect to it, but there was a problem keeping me from seeing the virtual monitor remotely. I reported these problems to the technician. While troubleshooting the issue, the technician rebooted the server several more times. He did not tell me he was going to do this and I do not believe that he did so safely. I think he abruptely powered off and on the server. I believe this caused the the filesystem to become corrupted.

While we use a journaling filesystem which is supposed to protect the server from incidental power outages, apparently multiple abrupt reboots one after another are enough to cause corruption. I started fscking (similar to chkdsk) the filesystem before lunch today and by the time I left work it still had not finished. Since the filesystem could not be fixed I had no choice but to reinstall.

We have nightly backups of the server which we keep on the server and occasionally I copy only the Dark Castle mud program and its related world, characters, etc offsite. Due to this, I did not have an offsite copy of the entire server which I could restore. I only had an offsite copy of the Dark Castle mud program and its related files. I reinstalled the OS from scratch and restored the forums and Dark Castle files from their backups.

We ran the clean up script on the forum today.

This means that inactive accounts (longer than 12 months without logging in I believe) were deleted.

If your account was lost, you simply need to make a fresh one.

There's no penalty for an inactive account other than you may occasionally lose it if you only log in once a year.

Dark Castle has moved to a faster server attached to a faster network connection.

Its new IP address is 206.222.16.146
Ports: 6666, 23, 80, and 4000.

Forum Automatic Updating

Some of the boards within the forum have a 1 year expiration on threads.

Most boards remove threads inactive for longer than 365 days.
The auction board is a special case and removes threads after 180 days.

Some boards that we use for archival purposes (and the "Out There" board which is just dang amusing) have no expiration.

Accounts that are inactive longer than this time also are automatically removed though you are welcome to re-sign up at any point if your account has been deleted due to inactivity.

Connecting to Dark Castle MUD

The Dark Castle IP and telnet link are:

We support ANSI color and MSP.
The DC Staff reccomends the use of a "MUD client" for maximum game experience.
MUD clients "Zmud" and "WinTin" are both excellent options that integrate well
with DC's code.

Make sure when you log in for the first time you familiarize yourself with the
helpfiles and rules. You can always ask an Immortal (type wizlist to see who they are)
for assistance.

Email Address Policy

Hi,

If you try to set up an account with a false email address it won't work. The system needs to be able to email you your password as its generated randomly.

Unless someone hacks in and swipes the email addresses they should be safe enough. We will not release your email address to anyone else.

We *might* send out a bulk email about the game if something critical is happening. Thats pretty unlikely though, we plan to stick to notification through the board system and through the game itself.
